Friday is Gun Violence Awareness Day, and people across the country will participate in the Wear Orange campaign to raise awareness about gun violence prevention.

The campaign gained momentum after the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot and killed five years ago in Chicago. Her friends wore orange to honor her and raise awareness about gun violence.

The campaign's organizer, Everytown for Gun Safety, says participants wear orange during the annual event to also honor the nearly 100 people it says are killed by gun violence every day in America.

This year's Wear Orange campaign continues over the weekend with hundreds of rallies, community events and picnics taking place throughout the U.S.
