Talks between top U.S. and Mexican officials started Monday.

Last week, President Donald Trump said he would impose 5% tariffs on Mexican imports starting June 10. Those taxes would gradually rise to 25%. President Trump said the tariffs would only be lifted if Mexico keeps people from crossing the border illegally.

So that's what Mexican officials are in Washington to work on. On Monday, a delegation led by Mexico's economy secretary was in the U.S. to meet with her counterpart Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Then, on Wednesday, Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs will meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

At a press conference Sunday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his belief that the two countries would come to an agreement.
