LeeAnne LowryU.S. humanitarian aid originally designated for Venezuela will now be distributed in Colombia. It will be handed out to Venezuelan migrants there, since President Nicolás Maduro has continuously blocked the aid from entering Venezuela.
The U.S. Air Force sent the three cargo planes filled with supplies to the Colombian border town of Cúcuta in February.
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó called for the foreign aid because the country is facing a huge economic and political crisis. About 3 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2015.
Almost half those migrants have taken refuge in neighboring Colombia. Earlier this week, Colombia — along with Peru — called for more aid from the international community to help handle the influx.
On Thursday, Colombia announced it reached a decision with the U.S. to give the supplies to the Venezuelan refugees in Colombia. It will also help poor Colombians.
According to Reuters, Colombia's president said its migration crisis will probably get worse if Maduro stays in power.
