President Donald Trump visited Pittsburgh Tuesday following what's likely the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in American history. He made the trip despite some local officials asking him not to come and multiple congressional leaders declining to join him.

Funerals for the 11 people who died in the shooting at Tree of Life synagogue on Saturday began shortly before Trump arrived, and local leaders said he should wait to visit until after the final funeral Friday.

The president was greeted at the synagogue by the congregation's rabbi, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S. and a crowd of protesters.

Trump has been criticized in the wake of the tragedy and accused of inciting hatred through his rhetoric, potentially emboldening attackers.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto declined to meet with the president and urged him to delay his trip and respect "the will of the families." At least one victim's family also declined to meet with Trump, in part due to his suggestion that the synagogue should have had armed guards.
