President Donald Trump has tapped Robert O'Brien as the new White House national security adviser.

O'Brien was serving as the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs at the State Department.

In that role, O'Brien led the U.S.'s diplomatic efforts on overseas hostage-related matters. O'Brien is also co-founder of a nationally recognized litigation firm.

Wednesday's announcement comes a week after former national security adviser John Bolton turned in his resignation.

The position of national security adviser doesn't require Senate confirmation.
