President Donald Trump says Mexico and Canada can avoid paying the White House's recently proposed steel and aluminum tariffs — if they agree to a new trade deal.

The president said in a tweet, "Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed."

Trump is talking about a meeting on Monday to discuss the decades-old North American Free Trade Agreement, a deal he's repeatedly criticized.

This goes against earlier statements from the White House about the new tariff plan. Trade adviser Peter Navarro said Sunday the tariffs would be "across the board, with no country exclusions."
