A recanvass of a handful of Iowa caucus precincts shows Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders by only four-thousandths of a percentage point.

According to the latest numbers released by the Iowa Democratic Party, Buttigieg leads with 563.207 state delegate equivalents, while Sanders follows close behind him with 563.127 state delegate equivalents, out of 2,152 counted.

Sanders' campaign says it will seek an official recount, while it remains unclear if Buttigieg's campaign will do the same.

The recount opens Buttigieg and Sanders to a possible shift in the number of delegates to the national convention they hold.

The Associated Press says it remains unable to declare a winner of the Iowa caucuses "as the results may still not be fully accurate and are still subject to the recount."
