What started with public shows of confidence by both sides that the U.S. and North Korea could ease tensions and even make progress toward denuclearization ended with a thud Thursday.

Both Democratic and Republican leaders praised President Donald Trump for walking away from negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The president said Kim wanted too much for too little, refusing to commit to enough concessions in order for the U.S. to lift sanctions. North Korea blamed President Trump, saying it only asked for partial sanctions relief.

In this episode of "The Why," Newsy breaks down what happened in negotiations this week and what comes next in U.S.-North Korean relations.
