SCOTUS To Hear Case Over Obamacare Payments To Insurers

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to take up a case from health insurers who say the federal government owes them billions of dollars due to their losses under Obamacare. 

On Monday, the high court said it would consider combined cases from three insurers: Maine Community Health Options, Moda Health Plan, Inc., and Land of Lincoln Mutual Health.

The companies say the government owes them $12 billion in payments under a program meant to protect insurers from significant losses during the early years of Obamacare.

Last summer, a federal appeals court ruled that the government isn't responsible for the payments. So earlier this year, the insurers appealed that decision to the Supreme Court.

The high court will hear the case during the 2019-2020 term.
