Known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," Mladić led forces that carried out ethnic cleansing against Bosniaks during the 1990s.

Besides ordering sniper campaigns and indiscriminate artillery barrages, Mladić also directed the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, which killed over 7,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys.

Mladić was on the run for 16 years before he was arrested in Serbia in 2011. Wednesday's verdict marked the end of a five-year trial.
