On Thursday, the Vatican released a letter to U.S. bishops that addresses the sexual abuse scandal within the Catholic Church.
The letter was sent to the nearly 250 American bishops who are attending a spiritual retreat in Illinois. Pope Francis suggested the retreat as a step toward responding to the Church's "crisis of credibility."
In the letter, Francis acknowledged a "culture of abuse" in the church and specifically called out those who have attempted to cover up crimes. In order to move forward, Francis says, the church needs a new approach to its management, mindset and exercise of authority.
Francis has already asked bishops from around the world to meet in Rome next month to address the abuse scandal.
