Briana KoenemanNew Hampshire has abolished the death penalty.
On Thursday, the state Senate voted 16-8 in favor of a bill to repeal capital punishment, overriding a veto from Republican Gov. Chris Sununu. The legislation passed in the House last week.
The decision makes New Hampshire the 21st state to strike down the death penalty, and the repeal will go into effect immediately.
The last time New Hampshire carried out an execution was back in 1939. But the state currently has one prisoner on death row — Michael Addison. He was sentenced to death in 2007 for the murder of a police officer. The repeal doesn't apply retroactively to his case.
