The U.S. military reportedly added more than 4,000 names to the FBI's list of people banned from owning a firearm.

CNN was the first to report the news, noting the additions came after a former military member killed more than two dozen people at a Texas church in November.

The U.S. Air Force failed to report the shooter's general court-martial for domestic violence, which should have prevented him from purchasing a gun under federal law.

After the shooting, the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps told CNN they were searching through old records to make sure no one else who should be barred from buying a weapon slipped through the cracks.

As of the end of January, the number of people barred from owning a firearm because of a dishonorable discharge sits at more than 15,000. CNN reports that number hovered around 11,000 before the November shooting.
