Step aside, Colin Farrell. HBO's "True Detective" has its next star — Mahershala Ali.
The actor recently won an Oscar for best supporting actor for his work in "Moonlight" — which also won the award for best picture.
Casey Bloys, the network's president of programming, confirmed the casting news during HBO's Television Critics Association presentation Wednesday.
Ali will star in the third season of "True Detective." But here's the catch — HBO hasn't technically signed off on season three yet.
The show's first season was a critical success. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the series was nominated for 12 Emmy awards, of which it won five.

But critics didn't react as positively to "True Detective's" second season, which featured Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn.
The show's sophomore run ended in August 2015, but we didn't hear about a potential third season of "True Detective" until earlier this year.
HBO is currently waiting to lock in a director before officially picking up the third season of "True Detective."
