Katherine BiekSupporters and opponents were quick to chime in Monday after President Donald Trump announced he was nominating Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Hundreds gathered at the courthouse to protest Trump's decision. And Sen. Bernie Sanders joined in to voice his objection.
"Are you ready for a fight? Are you ready to defend Roe v. Wade?" Sanders said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kamala Harris also brought up abortion rights as part of the reason they're opposing Kavanaugh's nomination.
On the other hand, Senate GOP leadership applauded the move. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called Kavanaugh a "superb choice," while Majority Whip John Cornyn said he was "exceptionally qualified."
Some lawmakers, like Sens. Joe Manchin and Susan Collins, didn't pick a clear side, noting they'd thoroughly vet Kavanaugh's credentials before making any decision.
In order to get confirmed, Kavanaugh will need to be approved by a simple majority in the Senate.
