Officials in Hawaii say 35 structures have been destroyed by lava flowing from multiple eruptions on the state's Big Island.

Officials are largely focused on a neighborhood southeast of Hilo. About 1,700 people have evacuated. Some people are being allowed to go back to their homes during the day, but they're being warned about potential negative effects from the sulfur dioxide in the air.

The lava flows have downed power lines and blocked roads. The U.S. Geological Survey said there was a lull in volcanic activity early Monday but that it likely wouldn't stick.
