Gabrielle WareA judge has ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to extend its temporary shelter program for Puerto Ricans affected by Hurricane Maria.
FEMA's Transitional Sheltering Assistance program was extended by 20 days. It now expires July 23. It was set to expire Tuesday night after its last extension, which began on Sunday.
About 1,700 people would have to evacuate hotels and motels on the mainland if the extension were not granted.
FEMA also announced Tuesday that hurricane survivors have until August 30 to use the Transportation Assistance program. That pays for flights, luggage and pet fees to go back to Puerto Rico.
A U.S. district judge is expected to issue a final ruling on whether the transitional housing program will be extended any further on its next expiration date.
