Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will travel to China for a regional summit and a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in June.

This comes as the U.K., China, France, Germany and Russia scramble to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive without the United States' participation.

Rouhani will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Qingdao, China, as an observer. That summit focuses on trade and security. Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders from the region will also reportedly be there.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan. Iran has expressed interest in joining.

Chinese officials said Rouhani and Xi would also meet separately from the summit.
