Former President George H.W. Bush will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda late Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning.

Bush's death was announced late Friday evening by the office of his son, George W. Bush. The statement didn't include details about the cause of death. The elder Bush's wife, Barbara, passed away in April.

According to the Architect of the Capitol, military officers and government officials are eligible to "lie in state," meaning their coffin is on display for citizens to pay their final tribute. When the government honors private citizens in the same way, it's called "lying in honor."

There will be a private arrival ceremony for the Bush family and members of Congress just before the Rotunda opens up to members of the public who want to pay their respects around 7:30 on Monday. Some streets on the Capitol grounds and in the nearby area were closed starting Sunday evening.
