Former New York Times reporter Sarah Kershaw was found dead in her Dominican Republic home Monday. She was 49 years old.

Officials said Tuesday Kershaw's body was found at her apartment in Sosua, which she shared with her husband, William Norton. They moved to the island together back in 2014.

Police announced on Facebook a preliminary autopsy showed she died of "asphyxiation by hanging."

A prosecutor for the province of Puerto Plata told reporters Norton was taken into custody for questioning in connection to his wife's death, though authorities said a cause of death has not been identified.

Prior to moving to the Dominican Republic, Kershaw worked for The New York Times for 11 years starting in 2000. She also wrote for the newspaper Newsday, among other publications. She was a freelance writer at the time of her death.
