Delta Air Lines has soared to the top of a major annual ranking of U.S. air carriers.

The 29th annual Airline Quality Rating put Delta Air Lines in the No. 1 spot on its list after it spent the last two years in second place.

JetBlue came in at No. 2 this year, followed by Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Frontier Airlines sank to the bottom of the list, just behind American Airlines.

Out of all nine U.S. carriers included in the AQR, Delta was the only one that showed improvement in all four of the ranking's categories: on-time arrival percentage, mishandled baggage rate, involuntary denied boardings and consumer complaints.

But the AQR says the industry as a whole is getting better. One of the ranking's co-authors said in a statement, "Consumers have demanded better, and the industry listened and improved."

Shortly after the ranking was released, Delta's chief operating officer said the recognition is "something really special" for the airline, crediting the company's 80,000 employees for its success.
