Dozens of Iraqi protesters were killed over the weekend in clashes with security forces, as thousands took part in nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

Multiple outlets report that around 63 protesters have been killed since demonstrations began on Friday, and CNN reports that more than 2,592 people have been injured.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Baghdad on Friday in a continuation of protests that began in early October. Protesters say they're taking a stand against government corruption, a lack of basic services and high unemployment levels.

As the protests continued into Saturday, security forces began using tear gas and live rounds in order to subdue protesters who attempted to enter Baghdad's Green Zone, which contains government offices and embassies.

As of Sunday morning, Al Jazeera reported that protesters continued to gather in Baghdad's central Tahrir Square, with Iraq's elite counter-terrorism service deployed to protect important state buildings.
