Jay StrubbergLet's hear it for Kansas City! For the second time in less than a year, the shouts and screams of Chiefs fans helped Arrowhead Stadium claim the title as the world's loudest stadium.
In the second quarter of the Chiefs' eventual 41-14 blowout of the New England Patriots Monday night, the Arrowhead Stadium crowd reached a decibel level of 142.2 — a new record in the Guinness Book of World Records.
That tops the previous level of 137.6 dB set by Seattle Seahawks fans last December.
Interestingly, Chiefs and Seahawks fans have been duking it out for the Guinness Book of World Records title. Each team has now broken the record twice since the beginning of last year. Which makes us wonder when we'll have to do this all over again.
This time around, local affiliates reported officials handed out ear plugs to the crowd because the noise was comparable to the volume of a jet engine.
KSHB caught up with some Chiefs fans prior to their achievement. One fan discussed the, well, techniques used to maximize the volume. Don't worry, we lowered the audio a bit for you here.
CHIEFS FAN: "Gotta have a good athletic stance. And always cup the hands. And just give your big, 'Ohhhh!' Imagine that times 80,000."
Fans even stole the media's attention, as all eyes — or ears, rather — were on the record books even before the game. ESPN's TV promo for the game featured super-imposed words over fans cheering that read, "IF YOU MAKE A STATEMENT MAKE IT LOUD."
