Protecting Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is expected to cost nearly $8 million this fiscal year.

The U.S. Marshals service estimates her security detail from now through September 2019 will cost $7.74 million, which is about $1 million more than last year.

The increased cost is due to estimated higher travel and per diem costs as well cost of living adjustments, according to a Marshals service spokesperson.

Cabinet members don't usually get Marshals' service protection. But Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered it for DeVos in 2017 after an encounter with demonstrators at a middle school in Washington.

The Marshals service says it has also determined a threat to her safety exists.
